What Is a French A Level?
The French A Level is a two-year academic course typically offered at colleges in the UK. It is a recognised qualification that can contribute significantly to university applications. Achieving an A* grade in French A Level earns 56 UCAS points (UCAS stands for the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service in the UK).

The qualification is offered by several exam boards, each with their own specifications. However, the core structure of the course remains broadly similar across all boards.

Year 1 – AS Level (Advanced Subsidiary)
Students may choose to complete only the AS Level at the end of the first year. This involves three papers, based on key themes covered throughout the year:

Paper 1: Listening, Reading, and Translation (from French into English)

Paper 2: Written response to one film or one literary text, including translation from English into French

Paper 3: Speaking examination

Year 2 – Full A Level
The full A Level is completed at the end of the second year, with three final exams:
